INC Analysis of Pistachio Production for 2021-2022

Although 2021/2022 was a down year, global pistachio production has increased compared to the previous 10 years, and this year was the second most productive year of pistachio production after 2020/2021.

In 2021-2022, the largest suppliers of pistachios in the world are the United States (67%), Iran (17%), and Turkey (11%). Of the three, the United States produces about four times more pistachios than Iran and almost six times more than Turkey. But on the other hand, the statistics of pistachio production in the last 5 years in Iran and Turkey show an upward trend compared to the United States.

According to statistics, in 2021-2022, the United States is the first global exporter with a 67% share of pistachio exports. Iran is in the second with 17% and Turkey with 11% of pistachio production is in the third place. Meanwhile, in the 5-year average chart, Iran accounts for 22% of the world’s total pistachio production.

The table below shows that China was the first importer of pistachio by purchasing about 40 percent more pistachios over a period of 10 years. During the last 10 years, this country has had an increasing trend with some ups and downs. The second place is for Germany then the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth places are for Belgium, Spain, India, and Italy, respectively.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, global pistachio production is projected to decline by 16% to 829,000 tons in Iran and Turkey by 2021/22, which is more than the US can afford to meet global demand. Global consumption, trade and final reserves are also expected to decline as a result of declining supply.

Iran’s production, reported by the Iranian Pistachio Association, is projected to fall 29 percent to 135,000 tons, as frost damage has reduced yields in many growing regions, despite the fact that this year was predicted to be a fruitful year for pistachio orchards in Iran. As a result of lower harvests, exports are expected to be 41% lower at 135,000 tons. Domestic consumption seems to remain virtually unchanged, with final reserves halved to 5,500 tons.

In addition, US production is predicted to rise again, increasing to 10 percent to a record 523,000 tons due to a combination of high yields and rising farmland. The last time production increased in the United States for two consecutive years was in 2010-11, when high production was accompanied by an increase in the area under cultivation. In recent years, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), exports with massive shipments to China and the EU’s top markets are projected to increase by nearly 25 percent to a record 290,000 tons, with final reserves expected to reach a record 155,000 tons.

On the other hand, Turkish production is predicted to fall by 65% to 87,000 tons. Less production will have a limited impact on trade because almost the entire product is consumed domestically.

According to Statistica, the wholesale price per kilogram of pistachios worldwide from 2022, until February 2022 according to the following table:

Pistachio Production

As you can see, according to studies, the price of a kilogram of American pistachios was $ 12.35 and Iranian pistachios were about $ 11.6. Despite all the recent problems caused by frost damage and reduced yields, according to the Tridge website, Iranian Fandoghi pistachio kernels are still sold at less than half the US price.
